  • Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup apple juice or apple cider
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 shots of espresso (or 1/2 cup very strong brewed coffee)
  • 1 cup oat milk (extra creamy works best)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • Apple slices or a dash of cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the apple juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir the mixture constantly until the sugar has completely dissolved. Let it simmer for about 5 to 7 minutes until it thickens slightly into a syrup consistency. Remove from heat and let it cool before using.
  2. Brew two shots of your favorite espresso. If you do not have an espresso machine, brew 1/2 cup of very strong coffee using a French press or a moka pot. Let the coffee cool for a few minutes so it does not immediately melt all the ice in your glass.
  3. Fill a tall glass with one cup of ice cubes. Drizzle about 2 tablespoons of your homemade apple brown sugar syrup over the ice. Feel free to add more or less depending on how sweet you like your coffee.
  4. Pour the oat milk into the glass over the ice and syrup. Leave about an inch of space at the top of the glass for the coffee layer. Give it a very gentle stir if you want the syrup to begin incorporating with the milk.
  5. Slowly pour the brewed espresso or strong coffee over the top of the oat milk. For the best layered effect, pour the coffee over the back of a spoon. This helps the coffee sit on top of the milk rather than mixing instantly.
  6. Finish the drink by adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or a few thin slices of fresh apple on top. Serve immediately with a straw and enjoy the flavors of fall.
