Ingredients
Scale
- 6 to 8 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish or a 2-quart casserole dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray to ensure nothing sticks to the sides.
- In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar and half of the cinnamon. Once the apples are evenly coated, spread them into an even layer in your prepared baking dish.
- In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, nutmeg, and the remaining cinnamon. Use a pastry cutter or your clean fingers to work the cold butter cubes into the mixture until it looks like coarse crumbs with some pea-sized lumps.
- Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the top of the seasoned apples. Make sure the fruit is completely covered so the topping can form a nice, protective crust while it bakes.
- Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The topping should be a deep golden brown, and you should see the apple juices bubbling up around the edges of the pan. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
